July - Fighting the Imposter Goblin and JAM for humans
Date: 31st July 2019
Time: 18:45 - 20:30
This month we have Beth North talking about fighting the Imposter Goblin and our old friend (and former organiser) Chris Manson is visiting us to talk about Empress!
We'll also be giving away a ticket to the React Advanced conference in London (25th October) and 2 codes for a year subscription for a Jetbrains toolbox product of your choice!
Imposter Syndrome as a Techie
As a Woman in Tech, I’ve experienced my fair share of self-doubt. It wasn’t until a year or two ago that I learned of Imposter Syndrome, something clicked; like someone handed me a cheat sheet to a jigsaw puzzle. Since then I’ve been learning more about psychology and why people react in a certain way to situations and how my own mind fits into all of this. Nearly 70% of people in tech have said they’ve experience Imposter Syndrome in some way. I want to take you on a journey through my career and what I’ve been doing to fight that Imposter Goblin. The one that won’t stop shouting when you’re trying to be your best self.
Empress - JAM Stack Templates for Human Beings
With the metoric rise of the JAM Stack it is easy to get lost and not know where to start. And with JSX, React, GraphQL, Vue, and all the other technologies floating around it's easy to think 'What ever happened to good old HTML!?'.
Empress is a new project that is trying to bring a bit of clarity to the market of static site generation and hopes to focus on the end-user, both the people wanting to make websites and developers or designers that want to make templates.
Chris will walk you through how Empress is different to Gatsby and VuePress, explain what an "Empress product" is and hopefully inspire you to build your own empress-blog template even if you only know HTML and CSS!
